SureFlo® as an effective processing aid in plastics recycling
In the plastics industry, the efficient processing of recycled material is of great importance – both from an economic and an ecological perspective. The black thermoplastic hydrocarbon resin SureFlo® from Polymer Solution Group has been specifically designed to optimize the processing of thermoplastic polymers such as polypropylene, polyethylene, polystyrene, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene copolymer, and polyamide, offering a powerful solution in the areas of homogenization and compatibilization. Key properties and advantages of SureFlo® include improved flowability, increased throughput, shortened cycle times, reduced processing temperature, and reduced downtime. SureFlo® is used in various processing applications such as injection molding, extrusion, and compounding.
Overall, SureFlo® helps make plastic recycling more efficient and sustainable by preserving the quality of recycled materials and reducing production costs.
Impact modifiers: key to quality and compatibility in the plastics cycle
SBCs are proven additives for optimizing the mechanical properties of recycled plastics. They are successfully used in styrenics, polyolefins and engineering thermoplastics as they provide a balanced combination of impact strength and flexibility. While pure SBS and SEBS grades increase impact strength through the combination of styrene and elastomer blocks, MAH-grafted SEBS grades are also used for compatibilization. They act as adhesion promoters between non-polar and polar polymers, optimizing the homogeneity and mechanical properties of mixed plastics. Our SBCs therefore provide an effective solution for improving the performance of recycled plastics and creating new applications.
In addition, with Yparex (formerly Exxelor) we offer high-performance additives based on EPDM, PP or HDPE. The different levels of grafted MAH improve the impact strength of thermoplastics even at very low temperatures.
Upgrading of recyclates through odor improvement
Recycling is a necessary step in order to make the plastics industry sustainable. Waste should and must be used as a valuable resource. Through different processes, i.e. mechanical, chemical and enzymatic recycling, plastic and synthetic waste is turned into recyclates that can be used as starting material for new products. Depending on the sorting and origin of the waste (PIR or PCR) and its contamination, the plastic recyclates can smell unpleasant. This would only make it possible to use them in inferior products. The odor-causing compounds can be removed by thermal-physical cleaning processes or bound by the use of odor absorbers.
TER-SORB MB odor absorbers are available in the TER Chemicals portfolio. These contain a 50% proportion of already activated zinc ricinoleate, which is incorporated into a polymer matrix. The odor absorber chemically binds various odor-causing compounds and thus has a permanent effect. Due to their powder form, the TER-SORB MB absorbers enable precise dosing even of very small quantities and can easily be dry mixed or fed directly into the single or twin-screw extrusion line.
